Chapter 9 – Checking Lily’s Status

Chapter 9 – Checking Lily's Status

Checking Lily’s Status

“Lily. Could you come here for a moment?”

“Kyahaha! No way~!”

Lily was having the time of her life.

Even just getting her to change clothes had been a huge ordeal today.

She never listened on days when she was in a good mood—especially.

“Please. Just for a little bit, okay?”

“Hmm, what should I do~?”

The other day, I’d hired an S-rank adventurer using Lily’s Provisional Determination Document for her Light Aptitude as collateral.

If that Provisional Determination Document turned into a Certification Document, the church would pay the Adventurer Guild.

That’s why I’d heard a White Priest was being dispatched to our village.

But instead, His Holiness the Pope had shown up at our house of all places…

Who happened to be passing through this way by chance.

The clerk at the town hall had delivered the letter, and now my hands wouldn’t stop shaking.

The Pope outranked even the king, for heaven’s sake!

I had to clean the place from top to bottom to avoid any discourtesy.

There was so much to do.

“Come on, just try saying ‘Status’. ‘Status’.”

“No~! I won’t say it~! Kyaha!”

And yet I couldn’t even catch Lily as she darted around the house.

I wanted to teach her Status Full Open, but she wouldn’t listen to me at all.

What was I supposed to do?

I felt like clutching my head and bursting into tears.

“Hold on a sec. ‘Status Full Open’.”

“Kyahahaha! No way~!”

Sigh. If only I could leave it to Marie at times like this—she always managed somehow…

I really appreciated her now, more than ever.

It had been easier to keep Marie in line, so I’d ended up spoiling Lily rotten.

No point regretting it now.

“Fine. If you don’t say it, no dinner, okay? ‘Status’. Come on?”

“Hmm~. Ehehe. If you give me dinner, maybe I’ll say it~.”

It was like she was enjoying every second of watching me flounder.

Sigh.

Watching Lily gleefully mash her food with her hands and stuff it in her mouth just filled me with gloom.

She was only five, after all. If I raised her right from here on out…

“Lily. Practice time right after dinner.”

“Mm? Later~.”

“We promised earlier, remember?”

“Hehehe~. I might get sleepy~.”

In the end, even after feeding her, she still wouldn’t say it.

What was I going to do?

◇◇◇◆◇◇◇

A month had passed since then. His Holiness the Pope arrived at our house with a huge entourage of White Priests, and outside stood the Holy Knights—far grander a procession than I’d imagined. I was floored.

“No need to stand on such ceremony. This must be the child with Light Aptitude, aye?”

“Yes.”

His Holiness gazed at Lily playing off to the side with incredibly kind eyes.

I had to speak up.

“No mistake on the name—Lily, correct?”

“Yes. That’s right.”

His Holiness smiled delightedly and crouched down to meet Lily’s gaze.

The White Priests panicked at the sight of him dropping to his knees right in front of her.

“Hello, Lily.”

“…”

Lily glanced at His Holiness, then scurried behind me without a word.

I gently drew her close as she anxiously clutched my hand.

“Fofufufu. Apologies, lass. Hadn’t meant to frighten ye.”

What should I do? I had to explain properly.

Terrified, I bowed my head frantically.

“I-I’m so sorry. The thing is… she can’t say Status Full Open yet…”

“What of it? Perfectly normal for a wee bairn. Here, use this.”

At His Holiness’s words, a nearby White Priest pressed something like a wooden placard against Lily.
