Chapter 15 – Intensive Training Camp – Heart and Fernet

Chapter 15 – Intensive Training Camp – Heart and Fernet

“Fernet, no magic during the training camp. Go get tonight’s dinner. Heart, you’re Fernet’s guard.”

“Yes!”

No way… Magic’s off-limits?

Melee combat’s not my strong suit…

“It’s fine. I’ll be your shield. Just focus on attacking for now.”

“Got it.”

I trudged along with slumped shoulders, but Heart patted my back to cheer me up.

Thank goodness Heart’s my guard.

Gain told me this camp was to build up strength without relying on magic.

But I’m a mage. I wanna take ’em down stylishly with a quick spell or two…

Still, Marie’s working hard too…

“In these winter mountains, do magical beasts even show up that easily?”

“Hold on. I’ll scout.”

Heart started scanning as he walked.

My senior brother’s way too competent. It’s exhausting.

I never scout while walking. Makes me nauseous.

Hm?

Heart tapped my shoulder and pointed into the distance.

Squinting, I spotted it—a Horned Rabbit.

Quick, hurl a knife…

“Even we’d get chewed out for just rabbits, right?”

After draining the blood from three rabbits and hanging them on a tree, Heart gave a wry smile.

Yeah, you’re right.

A little farther on, I started scouting on my own.

With all this blood spilled, they should come…

“Heart.”

Ice Wyverns—drawn by the blood scent—came swooping in from the direction I pointed.

Heh. No complaints about that, right?

Oh crap!

I forgot—no magic!

If I could use magic, those things would be a breeze.

Get too close, and they’d just knock me away. Knives won’t even scratch at this range.

Man, what do I do…?

I glanced at Heart, but he wasn’t planning to help…

Yeah, figured.

If I could at least use darkness stealth spells, I could manage in close quarters.

No way around it.

This is my only idea.

Alright! Time to throw knives!

◇◇◇◆◇◇◇

“Whoa, that’s a haul! Nice one, Fernet!”

Gain praised me for a job well done.

I’m an adult now, and with Marie watching… getting headpats is embarrassing.

I set down the rabbits and Ice Wyverns I’d been carrying, and Heart nudged me with a grin.

“Gain, praising Fernet might be a bit premature.”

“Huh?”

“Oh? Let’s talk details over there.”

“Hahaha…?”

I thought I’d made maximum use of having Heart as my guard, but I still got scolded.

Said I was a genius at using people.

Sure, Heart took down all the Ice Wyverns.

But luring them in, playing decoy, running around—that was all my strategy!

The next day, they allowed stealth magic, so I sniped them with throat shots.

Protesting that banning magic for a mage was like making a swordsman fight barehanded got me that concession. Saved.

Feels like it played right into Gain’s hands, though.

Still, thanks to me, we had meat dishes every day that winter.
