Chapter 19 – The Battle Crossing the Mountains
Chapter 19 – The Battle Crossing the Mountains
Grrrraaahhh.
A massive bear charged at us with ferocious speed, so enormous it barely fit in my field of vision.
Its sheer ridiculous size made my legs buckle beneath me.
Fernet winked at me with a relaxed grin and threw up a barrier. Suddenly, the bear’s movements slowed to a crawl.
Gain darted right into the beast’s guard in an instant, slashing at its leg with a sword wreathed in flames and forcing it down to its knees.
Maddened by the pain, the bear lashed out with its razor-sharp claws at Master.
Master leaped back dramatically to evade, crossed his dual blades, and started hacking the claws off at the root, one after another.
What an incredible manicure.
Sounds lame when you put it into words, but in reality, it was brutally impressive.
Heart scrambled up onto a boulder and unleashed a volley of arrows. They shot straight into the bear’s eyes without a single parabolic arc.
But its fur was too tough—the arrows bounced harmlessly off everywhere else.
Fernet slapped another barrier on the bear, locking its head in place. Gain plunged his sword into its gut and ripped downward with a grunt.
Heart followed up with dozens of dark arrows that stabbed deep in a flash, and Gain thrust into another spot, tearing it open as well.
With its head pinned, the bear thrashed wildly, swinging its arms in mad circles.
Master had severed both sets of claws, so there was no risk of getting shredded anymore, but a punch from those limbs would kill you flat out.
Master sprang off one of the flailing arms like a launchpad, slapped his hand against the bear’s neck, and unleashed a barrage of razor-sharp water blades at point-blank range.
Heart immediately took his place, hammering the same spot with repeated wind blades, until the bear’s head finally tumbled free—and the beast collapsed at last.
My heart was pounding like crazy. I’d completely forgotten to breathe.
Pings and dings kept echoing in my head. Bet I leveled up a ton.
“You can come out now.”
Heart called for me, so I rushed over in a hurry.
Someone always one-shot their foes before, so this was the first time I’d seen them struggle in a fight. I was stunned.
“Whew, the fur was tougher than I figured. Gave us a real run for it. Good thing you topped me up—my mana was totally tapped out.”
Master’s mana depleted?
I hurriedly handed him a mana recovery potion. He patted my head happily in thanks.
I offered some to Fernet and Heart too. “Thanks,” they said, both sinking down to sit.
“Gain, you okay? Any injuries?”
“Yeah, got a bit busted up. Heal me up, will ya?”
Busted? When did that happen?
I cast recovery magic on him. “You saved me,” he said with a grin my way. He rotated his arm in big circles, then told Master, “Sid, give it a short rest, then handle cleaning the claws.” With that, he got to work dismantling the bear.
Stuff like this is just lying around all over these mountains…
The shortest route sure lives up to its reputation.
