Chapter 21 – Night Sky
Chapter 21 – Night Sky
“Can’t sleep?”
“You too, Gain?”
I was gazing up at the night sky, thinking how pretty the stars were, when Gain came over with a blanket.
“Here.”
He wrapped me up snugly in the blanket and scooped me into his arms.
Hehe, so warm.
This place is full of dad energy.
“Marie, once you get to Grandpa’s place, what’re you gonna do?”
“I’m planning to study agriculture at the royal capital’s school. But things have gone way off my original plans, so I’m feeling a little thrown off.”
“Original plans?”
“The whole thing about growing medicinal herbs without using magic.”
“So that wasn’t just a joke after all,” Gain said with a soft chuckle.
I’m totally serious, you know.
Jeez.
“Why herbs, though?”
Come to think of it, why did I ever think I had to grow herbs?
…Oh, yeah.
Hehe.
“What’s up?”
“Mom told me that, right after I came out of the blessing room. ‘Your twin sister’s going to be the Saintess, so you’ll grow herbs to support her.'”
“That’s…”
Gain hugged me even tighter.
“Back then, I didn’t know any of the circumstances, so I had no choice but to go along with what Mom said. But somehow, it got drilled into me like it was my mission. I only just realized it now.”
“You’re a lot more grown-up than you look.”
I wonder about that.
Looking back now, it just feels like I was under extreme stress, got ordered around, and was in a deep state of brainwashing…
That family’s in the past now.
Ufufu. If only Gain were my dad…
“But I never imagined I’d be able to use magic from all attributes… I can only be grateful to you all, Gain.”
“Hmph. You earned it through your own hard work.”
It was a topic everyone had deliberately steered clear of ever since the end of the journey came into sight.
Once the journey’s over, what will I live for?
I’d steeled myself to keep going even without any blessings, but then this future suddenly opened up.
“Once you taste this kind of wonderful freedom, you start getting all sorts of extravagant ideas, don’t you?”
“Yeah. Live free. If I catch you pulling that fake smile from when we first met, I’ll laugh my ass off.”
“Hehe, same here.”
Gain rocked me gently like he was soothing me to sleep, and before I knew it, drowsiness overtook me and I drifted off.
“I wonder what kind of adult you’ll turn into. Being around you is so much fun, I ended up dragging the journey out way too long.”
I felt like I could hear Gain’s gentle voice echoing in my dream.
