Chapter 27 – Reunion with Grandfather
Chapter 27 – Reunion with Grandfather
Knock knock.
“Who’s there?”
“Grandfather? It’s Marie.”
Thud thud thud!
Bam!
“Ooooh!! Marie!! You’ve grown so much! Did you really walk here all by yourself?”
The door flew open with tremendous force, and suddenly I was scooped up into a hug and hoisted so high I thought I might hit the ceiling.
“G-Grandfather, please calm down!”
“Hahaha. Sonny, you’re scaring the girl.”
Eh, that voice…
“Master!!”
I shouted from up near the ceiling, and Grandfather handed me over to Heart, who gently set me down.
“Gain!”
Wait, where did that whole dramatic farewell from earlier go?
Give me back my tears.
“…So that’s the situation. Labor is mandatory, but we can go out freely, and with an application, overnight stays are allowed too. The leader and the others seem to be on my side, so it turned out to be a completely different place from what I imagined.”
As I explained the church’s atmosphere and my circumstances, everyone visibly relaxed with relieved expressions.
“We were actually in the middle of planning Marie’s rescue,” Grandfather said with a laugh.
“We even wrote a letter to Marie’s parents and sent it off,” Gain added, scratching his head. “Haha.”
“The one you met was probably the Pope.”
“The Pope? No way! He was just a fun, kind old grandpa.”
“To Marie, even the Pope is a ‘funny old man’! Wahahaha!”
Grandfather was a boisterously hearty guy, nothing like anyone else in our family.
“Fernet! Fernet!! Thanks to you, I was able to fake my status!”
I bounced over and hugged him, and he patted my head, saying, “Good, good.”
Then everyone started grilling me on what that was about.
“It’s this. Status Full Open.”
I gripped the pendant and displayed my status.
“Whoa, you found it?” “Ooooh.” “Well done, Fernet!” “Made it in time?”
“Even I was worried with that status. Good thing I have friends in high places.”
Everyone nodded in agreement, then playfully punched Fernet while saying, “You should’ve told us sooner!”
“But with that much freedom, staying under the church’s protection might not be so bad.”
“She has the aptitude but isn’t receiving special saintess protection, after all.”
Fernet and Heart nodded to each other.
“So… school really is impossible?”
“Church school is basically a magic training academy…”
“If you don’t absolutely hate it, I think staying inside the church is safer. We all have our jobs anyway. Well, Grandpa already sent a letter to your parents, so we’ll have to consult with them and decide.”
Magic training would definitely be trouble. Those blessings could easily get twisted into something demonic if mishandled.
Besides, the request is over now, so I can’t keep imposing on everyone.
Too many blessings… what a hassle this turned into.
“So, where’s the real one?” Gain asked, so I returned the pendant and activated “Status Full Open” again.
“Marie’s an S-rank adventurer?” Grandfather blinked in surprise.
Hehe. Oh, Grandfather.
I was shocked at first too.
“Your level’s shot up quite a bit.”
“I’d like to hit around level 100 by age 10.”
Level 100 by 10?
The highest in the village was like 40, I think.
These guys have warped senses. Impossible.
“The MP growth pattern is totally insane.”
“We should strengthen that Light Attribute. Training every night before bed starting today.”
And just like that, a training regimen was quickly decided. They’d even take me monster hunting on my days off if they could arrange escorts.
Hahaha.
Gain and the others decided to live at Grandfather’s house, which had plenty of spare rooms, for my sake.
They’d stay by my side from now on.
“Marie’s our daughter, after all,” Gain said.
Hehe. I was so happy that I ended up crying after I got back to the church.
