Alone in the backyard, covered head to toe in mud and planted firmly like a sumo wrestler, I suddenly had an angel appear right in front of me.
“Wow. What are you doing here?”
Not an angel after all—a cute boy in a uniform.
He was taller than me, so probably older?
“I’m planning to turn this spot into a backyard herb garden.”
“A backyard herb garden?”
Whoops, before we get into chit-chat, if a fine young master like him got spotted in a dump like this, it’d cause a huge uproar.
No time for small talk.
“Are you lost?”
“Yeah. I was exploring around.”
He didn’t look lost at all, flashing a confident smile with the poise of a true angel.
He could easily be mistaken for a girl.
“In that case, someone might be worried, so let me guide you to the front garden.”
“Thanks.”
Sure enough, as I led him to the front garden, a few other uniformed kids were searching for him.
Friends of his, maybe?
That was close. Real close.
Once I confirmed he’d been safely retrieved, I headed back to the backyard.
Not often the uniform crowd wanders over here.
“Hello.”
“Hello, Marie.”
I was heading out shopping, so I’d asked a holy knight for an escort.
My companion was Vidbary, an apprentice knight from the First Holy Knights, fresh into adulthood at fifteen.
The First Holy Knights were the Pope’s personal unit—elite of the elite.
No way could I stroll around with a holy knight in rags.
Note had told me to wear one of the donated outfits we had plenty of, but the captain had given me a bunch of his daughter’s hand-me-downs, so I went with those instead.
Which meant today, I looked like a proper young lady.
When I poked my head into the shop’s back entrance, someone called for the black-haired clerk, Coden.
“Fertilizer today, please.”
Coden politely took my card and application form, then returned with Bordo in tow.
“Oh dear, we can’t have a holy knight coming in through the back door. Please use the front.”
“The order’s already placed, so it’s fine right here. Isn’t it?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Next time, the front, please,” Bordo said with a wry chuckle.
Haha.
Yeah, front entrance probably would’ve been fine today.
As I sat waiting on the bench, Coden carefully placed the voucher and my card into my hand.
“We’ll deliver the goods straight to the church’s backyard.”
Hand in hand with Vidbary, we walked back to the church.
As an apprentice, he didn’t have permission to let anyone ride double on his horse while on duty.
“What does Marie need fertilizer for?”
“To grow herbs. I can’t use green magic, so I need fertilizer.”
“Huh. Why not just ask someone with green affinity?”
“Unlike holy knights, regular folks have very little mana. Can’t exactly ask them on a whim.”
“I see.”
Vidbary seemed endlessly impressed.
Ah! The clerk who’d shooed me off with a “shoo, shoo” was staring at me, eyes wide as saucers!
Heh heh.
The fish that got away was a big one!
Not that I knew for sure if he was a big catch, but I let myself feel smug anyway.
