Chapter 38 – Marie Turns Ten

Chapter 38 – Marie Turns Ten

Today, I turn 10 years old.

At Grandfather’s house, we had a grand celebration, and for the first time in ages, I enjoyed everyone’s home-cooked meals.

Hehe. Even the cake was homemade.

Lying on my bed in my room, I conjured five orbs of water condensed by magic onto my palm and cast recovery and detoxification spells on myself.

Haah, that was so much fun.

Well then…

With one hand, I juggled the water orbs, slowly carried them out the window, and then popped them with a pah, scattering them into mist.

Heh.

Tomorrow’s going to be an early start too, so I need to get to sleep soon…

Cleaning, cleaning, la la la~

The herb garden in the backyard has turned into such a wonderful space now.

It’s completely my personal hobby area, filled with rare medicinal herbs and spices.

At a glance, it looks like a weed patch since nothing’s in bloom, but this is all a treasure trove.

I’m researching ways to grow herbs without using magic, creating recovery potions without magic, and ways to dramatically boost the effectiveness of recovery potions.

Hehe.

The book on herb compounding that Gain and the others bought me long ago is my treasure.

They were thrilled to learn I’ve read it until it’s falling apart.

I’ve even borrowed the table and benches from the front garden.

Mmm—my very own garden, praised even by pro gardener Doruman-san!

As I was basking in happiness like always, I sensed someone’s presence and hurriedly grabbed the broom to pretend I was sweeping.

“Wait!”

“Catch him!”

Two boys in uniforms came running, chasing what looked like a younger boy also in uniform.

What? What’s going on?

They both look older than me.

For now, I hid myself and tossed the broom under the feet of the pursuing upperclassmen, tripping one up.

“Whoa, whoaaa!”

Thud—

The other upperclassman turned in surprise, helped the fallen one up, and they cornered the underclassman against the wall.

They were exchanging words, it seemed.

I felt a little bad for meddling in kids’ fights.

With his back to the wall, the underclassman was fending them off with the broom I’d thrown when a White Priest came running up, shouting, “Hold it!”

At that voice, the two upperclassmen fled.

Bullying, maybe?

The underclassman sat on the bench as the White Priest questioned him about what happened.

He noticed me watching quietly and gave a small bow.

The lunch bell rang, so I headed straight to the dining hall.

What was that all about?

This is my garden, you know.

◇◇◇◆◇◇◇

As always, the afternoon was spent in the archive room.

Over four years, I’ve organized this massive amount of documents.

Now, I’m everyone’s search engine.

“Marie, can you pull the documents on the flood damage from last time?”

“Sure thing.”

Flood control materials are third from the back… there, got it.

This must be for the flood control area survey mentioned in the recent minutes.

I should hand over these related documents too.

“Thanks! I’ll bring some tasty sweets next time!”

He’s Eisen-san, the administrative secretary. He hates incompetent people and is a bit rigid, no-nonsense type.

He used to be the most annoying “power harassment guy,” but now he’s the one bringing the most snacks.

Heh.

Besides the checkout logs, I’ve made a roster of everyone who comes here and their traits.

It helps me grasp who can do what in a pinch, and it lets me indulge in demon lord fantasies.

Skimming through the incoming documents like a newspaper is my daily routine.

The Pope really put… someone like me in this vital hub where all the church’s information converges…

I tilt the documents a bit toward the directions I want to push. I’m a slightly naughty kid.

Well, I’ve worked hard for it. I deserve a little reward like this.

Now…

The deepest back corner, where light doesn’t reach, is still uncharted territory. I want to tackle it by year’s end.

Alright, time to get to work today too.
