Chapter 42 – Lily Turns Ten
Chapter 42 – Lily Turns Ten
“If you teach me magic, I’ll practice writing my letters!”
“Lily. Dad said reading and writing come first, remember?”
I’m already ten years old, so why won’t Dad or Mom teach me magic?
I’ve worked so hard and can read a little now!
I don’t even know how to write!
Liar!
Everyone else gets their parents to teach them magic from a young age, or they hire some great teacher.
“Rudy’s already learning fire magic from his teacher. I could do it too if I had a magic teacher! It’s not fair—Rudy gets it all! I wanna learn too!”
No matter how much I beg, Mom just smiles with that sad look on her face.
It really pisses me off.
“Fine. I’m going out to play!”
To change my mood, I headed to the square, where Worth—a year older than me—and Mina—my age—came walking up, looking like they were having a great time.
“Where are you guys going?”
“Worth and I are practicing the festival dance today, just the two of us.”
Mina blushed as she gazed happily at Worth.
Huh, looks fun.
“I wanna come too!”
“It’s pairs only, so you have to bring someone, Lily.”
“Then how about I pair with Worth?”
I tilted my head a little as I said it, and Worth lit up with a joyful “Whoa!”
Heh heh.
Mina frowned, suddenly turning grumpy and snapping at me.
“Fine, go with Worth! I’ll ask Kirika instead!”
Mina gets mad way too easily.
But now that she said it, Kirika might be better after all.
“Hehe. Actually, maybe I want Kirika after all.”
I’d even offered to let her have Worth, but now both of them were sulking, so I got annoyed and decided to go invite Kirika myself.
Man, girls are such a pain.
I don’t get it.
I looked up at Kirika’s room on the second floor of the little house near the square and took a deep breath.
“Kirikaaa! Let’s go practice the festival dance~!”
Kirika poked his head out the window, spotted me, and grinned.
“Rudy’s here right now, so later, okay~?”
What the heck? Even Kirika?
“Lemme join too~!”
After a bit, he opened the door.
“Fine, but no being bratty about it.”
“If Rudy teaches me magic, I won’t be bratty at all.”
Kirika’s mood soured in an instant. He lifted his chin and crossed his arms.
“You can’t even write your own name. Shouldn’t you learn that before magic?”
That again.
I’m not doing anything that makes Mom happy until someone teaches me magic.
You wouldn’t get it.
“I hate it when you’re mean, Kirika.”
“Sorry, that’s not what I meant. I’m just saying I’ll teach you how to write.”
Kirika’s such a pushover with me, but he loves giving lectures.
He should just shut up and do what I say.
Hmph.
As we dashed up the stairs and into the room, Rudy was staring at a semitransparent panel floating in front of him.
“What’s that?”
“Hey! Don’t just peek at someone else’s status!”
Rudy jumped when I leaned in for a look and quickly made the panel vanish.
I didn’t get to see it.
“No need to say it like that…”
I made a face like I was about to cry, and Rudy and Kirika panicked hard.
Heh heh.
“I’ve never seen one before.”
“You seriously never checked your own status?”
Not like Rudy, who had a teacher and everything.
Don’t sound so shocked.
“Nope.”
“Got it, got it. Sorry for yelling. Try saying ‘Status Open’.”
“Status Open?”
Rudy looked at my status and tilted his head.
“Level 1? I get that you’ve never beaten a magic beast, but… you seriously never used magic even once?”
Kirika leaned in too and frowned.
“It’s true. You’re a bit behind at this point. Talk to your parents about it, yeah?”
“…Yeah.”
They both patted my head to comfort me, but that’s not it at all.
I can’t do it because no one’s teaching me magic.
I tried on my own, but I had no clue.
Kirika sat me down on the bed since I was moping, then brought me some water.
“Mom! Look at this!!”
The second I got home, I opened my status and pointed at it.
“Everyone was shocked that I’m Level 1. Why won’t you teach me magic?”
Mom, who was prepping dinner, turned around with that sad face again.
Enough already with that look.
What’s your deal, anyway?
“We’ll explain when Dad gets home. Go wash your hands and get changed first.”
What explanation?
I did as she said for now—washed up and changed—then waited for Dad to come home so I could hear what they had to say.
