Under a large tree on a slight rise, I’d been staring blankly up at the sky since morning.
Ahhh, so boooring~.
“Hey, Lily, what do you plan to do about your future?”
Again.
Kirika’s asking me something annoying too.
If the present is fun, that’s good enough, isn’t it?
Everyone’s always going on about the future. It’s so stupid.
When the time comes, I can just think about it then.
“I told you, I can’t use magic. Or is Kirika gonna fix that for me?”
To brush him off, I put on a slightly sad face.
Then Kirika turned back to me with a serious look.
“In our family, we all pour magic power into the fields every day to tend the crops. They want as many Green aptitude holders as possible, so they told me that if I’m getting married, it has to be someone with a ton of magic in Green. Pretty much every other family around here is the same. Rudy left the village a good while back to become a magic teacher.”
“So what?”
Kirika made a troubled face and let out a big sigh.
“So everyone’s properly thinking about their future and putting in the effort. If you could read, write, and do math, Lily, you could even work at the village hall, you know.”
A village office in a remote backwater dump like this? It’s just paperwork, mail delivery, and proxy stuff for the Adventurer Guild and church—basically the handyman for the whole village.
No thanks.
That’s a job for people with barely any magic power, and I don’t wanna marry someone like that.
“You know that’s not my thing, right? It’s fine. It’s all Mom’s fault anyway.”
“I can’t do it either, but I’m trying anyway. Stop just slacking off and blaming everyone else—put in some effort yourself for once. Being a full-time housewife like your mom? That’s not normal anywhere.”
Even if I try, it won’t make me able to use magic.
It’s all Mom’s fault and my dead sister’s. It has nothing to do with me.
Besides, whenever I think about doing something, Mina beats me to it. It’s not fair.
So I end up wanting everything she has.
And then she starts crying, saying, “Just don’t take Worth from me.”
I don’t want him. What a pain.
“Then Kirika should make me your bride. Then maybe I could try a little.”
“Don’t spring that on me outta nowhere. But if that’s what it’d take for you to shape up, Lily, I’d consider it.”
Kirika’s face went bright red as he turned away.
I’ve known for ages that he likes me.
“No good?”
“…Not no good. I’ll try talking to my parents. But you gotta learn to cook and sew too, Lily. I can’t sell it to them if you can’t do anything at all.”
“If you’re serious about me, you can convince them, right? I’ll talk to Mom too.”
“Got it. I’ll do my best.”
Kirika hugged me, trembling just a little, like he was scared to.
Hehe.
Cooking actually sounds kinda fun. Guess I’ll ask Mom to teach me.
