Chapter 58 – Adventurer Registration

Chapter 58 – Adventurer Registration

“I’d like to register as an adventurer, please.”

Accompanied by Gain and Heart, I arrived at the Adventurer Guild.

The guild hall was deathly silent, with everyone staring right at us.

Of course it was.

No one expects the Saintess to suddenly show up wanting to register as an adventurer.

“P-Please, wait just a moment!”

The usual receptionist dashed into the back with her voice cracking.

Haha. It’s a place I’ve been coming to since I was little, too.

“Hey, hey, what’s with you all today? Scared stiff or something?”

Gain grinned wickedly and taunted the crowd at the top of his lungs.

“What’s the big idea, Gain!”

“Wahaha! Heart’s little girl is the Saintess? Nobody told me that!”

“So that’s why you stuck her in the church? We got played!”

The adventurers, who had been watching silently up till now, suddenly erupted into chatter.

A sultry big sis poked my cheek and cooed, “My, you’ve grown so big,” while the usual old-timer gawked and asked, “You really becoming an adventurer?”

Phew…

This place really hasn’t changed a bit.

The Guild Master poked his head out and jerked his chin toward the back. “Yo. Get in here.”

Led by my two guardians through the din, I stepped into the Guild Master’s office.

“Who’da thunk the tiny little Marie would turn into the Saintess herself! That parade was somethin’ else!”

The Guild Master slapped his knees in excitement. Yep, classic Guild Master.

“The Pope and Gain came up with that whole show. Heart scattered the petals, and Master showered down the mist.”

“Pretty mystical, right?”

“Hell yeah, it was epic. Even a guy like me wanted to bow down to Marie!”

The Guild Master roared with laughter and clasped his hands together in prayer toward me.

“Hey, cut it out.”

Everyone glanced at my face and cracked up. “Nah, that’s a bit much.”

Ahahaha. Rude as it was, I couldn’t help getting swept up in the laughter.

“So? What’s this adventurer registration business?”

The Guild Master propped his feet on the table and slung an arm over the back of the sofa.

“Here’s the deal. We’re making Marie an official member of the team.”

The Guild Master scowled and glanced back and forth between Gain and Heart.

“Yeah, we’re turning Marie into an adventurer.”

Heart said it while looking right at me.

“Please take care of me.”

I bowed my head politely, and sure enough, the expected question came.

“What about your Saintess gigs?”

“The church is gonna send nomination requests to the Adventurer Guild for Saintess dispatches. Straight to us Black Dragon.”

Gain jabbed a thumb at his chest on “us.”

Fufu. He looked kinda pleased about it.

“Makes sense. Holy Knights ain’t cheap, and priests rack up lodging and travel bills like crazy.”

The Guild Master nodded thoughtfully and crossed his arms.

Exactly! That’s precisely it.

“You got it. Nomination requests mean the guild pockets fees, we get paid, the church saves a bundle, and everybody’s happy!”

“Marie talked the church brass into it just like that, huh?”

“Yep!”

Ehehe. All that praise is embarrassing.

Back then, I just shifted the topic to justify raising the Saintess in secret out in the backyard.

“Heard the recovery potions flooding the market—and the price drop—are all thanks to the Saintess too.”

“I developed them, sure, but the Pope’s the one who busted his hump to bring the prices down.”

“Huh. Not at all like the Pope I pictured.”

What kinda picture was that?

He’s the most hilarious grandpa ever.

“Couldn’t trust the guy for the longest time. Figured he was some power-drunk demon behind closed doors.”

Gain burst out laughing too.

They seriously thought that…? News to me.

“Who knew the ‘no-mana refining’ recovery potion Marie slaved over for nearly ten years would become the church’s cash cow—and cottage industry for low-mana folks everywhere.”

“Get this: the day before Heart joined the church, he banned me from magic and swords. ‘Use your brain from now on. Info and connections are your weapons.'”

I explained it to Heart, and he slapped a hand over his mouth in shock.

“That was supposed to come with school. You stuck to it for ten whole years…?”

Obviously.

“Gain’s the one who made Heart say it, right?”

“Yeah, but the backyard’s hidden from view…”

Heart looked super awkward, while the Guild Master just blinked in confusion like “Huh?”

To me, anything Gain says is law.

It sank deep into my soul that day the Silver Wolf attacked.

No washing that stain out now.

“I pushed myself on all sorts of things, clinging just to those words.”

I laughed it off with an “all’s well that ends well,” and Gain—beaming—gave my head a good, rough ruffle for the first time in ages.

Then, for the adventurer registration, I opened my status.

My two guardians shut down the Guild Master’s whining about “Lemme see the full thing,” and finally, the guild card got issued.

“Won’t be as much of a hassle as the church, don’t worry”… so that’s what he meant.

F-rank, huh.

Wonder if I can ever catch up to Gain and the others.
