Chapter 75 – Saintess Dispatch

Chapter 75 – Saintess Dispatch

“Sorry to keep you waiting. It was about the named request. We’re dispatching the Saintess.”

Gain said that the moment he returned.

An emergency summons from the Adventurer Guild in the dead of night like this.

I wondered what it could be, but yeah, this really is an emergency.

“Now?” Grandfather furrowed his brow.

“Yeah. We’re heading out right now. Everyone, hurry it up.”

We rushed around like we were being herded, hastily preparing for the journey.

A carriage was already arranged, waiting outside.

“Don’t worry.”

“It’s fine. I’m already sixteen, you know.”

Gain smiled and patted my head. “Ah, right, that’s true.”

As I hurriedly packed my things, I listened in while he clapped his hands.

“I’ll coordinate with the local priests and direct the residents. Heart, you’re on Marie’s protection detail. Fernet and Ted, stick with me.”

“Can’t I protect Marie?”

Ted piped up.

Gain put a hand to his chin, thinking.

“Hmm… Yeah… You two do move together a lot normally. Alright, join Heart as his assistant. It’ll be good study for you.”

“Thank you!”

Ted looked so thrilled he might break into a little song.

This was a first for me, seeing Ted like this.

Come to think of it, whenever he’s around Gain and the others, he acts his age—carefree and outgoing.

Maybe this is the real Ted.

“Marie, take care.”

“You too.”

We nodded to each other—let’s do our best.

The dispatch location was apparently a fairly large town on the opposite side from the mountains, past several forests.

“A massive magical beast appeared and injured townsfolk, soldiers, and adventurers.”

“What about the beast?”

“Local adventurers already took it down. We’ll arrive in three days. We’ll be pushing the horses pretty hard.”

Heart nodded and turned to me.

“Marie, put up a barrier over the entire carriage. If we run into any magical beasts, we don’t subjugate—just shake off obstacles and push forward no matter what.”

“Got it.”

I stuffed my Saintess robes and hair-and-makeup kit into my bag and tossed it into my space magic.

They say a Saintess’s appearance is super effective for calming chaos on-site.

“All set already? We’ll swing by the church afterward to pick up supplies.”

“I can store it in my space magic, so leave it to me.”

Gain slapped his forehead with an “Ah!”

“Shoot. Totally forgot Marie can use space magic.”

Hehe. Gain’s human too, after all.

Everyone makes mistakes sometimes.

“Depart once you’re ready. Let’s move!”

We raced the carriage to the church and stopped—and I was stunned.

No way, no way.

What the heck, all that luggage in just three days?

Piles of recovery potions, food, daily necessities—right in front of us.

“We need relief supplies to deliver to the site, right?”

Gain flicked my forehead like he’d read my mind.

Well, yeah, obviously.

“But didn’t we arrange four cargo wagons…?”

“Heh. I went ahead and canceled them.”

Fernet shot Gain a smug look.

“As expected of you, Fernet. Always on top of things.”

So dispatching a Saintess is basically disaster relief.

I’d thought it was just about healing.

Previous Saintesses had brought droves of Holy Knights and White Priests along—probably to lend manpower too.

Telling them to “just request from the Guild” might’ve been a shallow idea.

No use crying over it now. If we need it next time, we can arrange separately.

This time, we’ll go my way.

We all pitched in, diligently stuffing the luggage into the space magic. The mana drain was insane, but no helping it.

As the eastern sky began to brighten, we finally left the church behind.

“This is my first time traveling in such a fancy carriage.”

“Heh. Back then, you were dangling your feet off the back of a cargo wagon.”

Ted perked up at Heart’s words with a “Heh?”

“What kind of kid were you back then?”

Quit trying to dig up my black history every time things get quiet.

Heart knows the worst ones, so seriously, stop.

“A five-year-old acting all ‘I’m a proper lady’—total precocious brat.”

Gain burst out laughing.

Ugh! An ambush here of all places!

“She had this habit of clenching her hands tight when she got anxious.”

Heart.

That’s embarrassingly spot-on…

“She’d catch Heart off guard only to get countered, or zone out completely when focused.”

Everyone chimed in with “Yeah, yeah” at Gain’s words.

Hehe. Those days, huh.

That one year was so intense, so long—a real treasure in my life.

“All in all, she was always this earnest kid.”

That’s how you saw me, Gain…?

Makes me kinda happy.

“Heh. Marie hasn’t changed much since then, huh.”

Hahaha.

Wonder which story gave him that impression?

“Looks like it. So Ted got the full Marie baptism too.”

Gain was ruffling Ted’s hair vigorously.

Hehe. Gain’s go-to when he’s pleased.

Wait, no—baptism what?

The area had gone pitch black, so we pulled the carriage over at a spot good for camping.

I cast fatigue recovery magic on everyone, horses included.

“Thanks, Marie. Sorry, but handle the camp setup too.”

I threw up the usual barrier and whipped up baths and sleeping spots like always.

It’s been ages since I camped with Gain and the guys.

Like old times, the men handled cooking while I took my bath first.

“Bundle up the laundry in one spot, okay~?”

“Right. Forgot that with Marie around, we get laundry service.”

Fernet happily swung the ladle around, grinning.

“I’ll help.” I jumped in on serving too.

“You’ve grown so much.”

Tables I couldn’t even reach are now below eye level.

Hearing it from Fernet makes it kinda embarrassing.

“Wish I could’ve seen little Marie.”

“Haha, her hands were this tiny. Seriously adorable.”

Fernet spread his fingers to show Ted “about this big.”

Everyone together really is the best.

“We’ll head out at sunrise tomorrow. Kids, hit the sack early.”

Gain said with a smile.
