Chapter 89 – The Barrier is the Strongest
Chapter 89 – The Barrier is the Strongest
Indeed, just as Master said, there were swarms of them.
Ted was already slashing at the bees with water blades.
I thought for a moment and decided to conjure a tornado with wind magic to take out a bunch at once.
Even if I could wipe out large numbers this way, it was still going to take too much time.
By the time we finished, we were both wiped out.
We’d flown all over the sky already, and we’d burned through way too much mana for nothing.
Isn’t there a more efficient way to do this…?
“A-rank sure are something else, huh.”
“Haha, tell me about it. Phew, I’m finally out of mana. How about you, Marie?”
Ted looked up, breathing hard through his shoulders.
“I’m still good. But more importantly, what do we do with all these corpses?”
“These make great pest repellent for fields and such. Let’s take ’em all back.”
These bees were the source of that powder they used in the herb gardens.
I had no idea.
I packed them into bags with wind magic and stored them away in my space magic.
No need for butchering, and it was done in a flash.
“Think they’ll come back?”
“Probably. We can fight safely inside the barrier, so they might actually be pretty good magical beasts.”
“Then later, shall we brainstorm a more efficient way to take them down?”
“Sounds good.”
The sun had fully set, so we got to work setting up camp.
A little freaked out, I reinforced the barrier nice and strong.
Isn’t there some good method out there…?
“Marie? Your hands stopped moving.”
“Ah, sorry. In the middle of dinner. Just thinking if there’s a better way…”
I hurriedly shoved some salad into my mouth.
This dressing was another recipe straight from Sis.
She’d been teaching me all sorts of cooking since then.
I wanted to boost my femininity a bit, too.
“If we douse them in water, their wings get heavy and slow them down, but…”
“Then tomorrow, why don’t we go all out and soak ’em?”
“Worth a shot, maybe.”
“Yes!”
Alright! Tomorrow, we’ll flood the place with water!
“Ufufu. I’m kinda getting excited now!”
“Haha. Me too.”
When I woke up in the morning, the ground around the barrier was littered with Killer Bee corpses.
They must have attacked while we slept and smashed themselves to death against it.
…
Well, I had noticed something hitting harder than usual.
But they were bugs, y’know? Bugs smack into it all the time anyway, and there were so many, I didn’t pay it any mind.
“Marie, this…”
“Yeah. Kinda shocking.”
Even now, about ten of them were zapping against it.
Ted sidled right up to the barrier’s edge, grinning as he taunted and provoked them.
“Ted-san, wouldn’t it be great if we just stayed put like this?”
“You’re right. That’d be the most efficient by far.”
With that, Ted cheerfully started picking out tea leaves from the ones he’d brought.
He brewed some with his selection and set a cup down in front of me.
The aroma of tea was already wafting through the barrier, filling me with bliss.
I picked up the cup and savored the scent.
“Ahh, this tea smells wonderful.”
“Fernet-san brought it as a gift for you.”
Ted picked up the bag of leaves and said so.
“He nailed my tastes!”
“Fufu. You like citrusy scents, huh.”
That’s right, that’s right.
This smelled just like Earl Grey.
“Yes. It’s nostalgic… really soothing.”
Heart-san got into citrus scents because of me, too.
I took a slow sip from the cup, and my face broke into a smile without thinking.
Haa~. So relaxing.
We spent the time inside the barrier reading books, sipping tea, and occasionally clearing away bee corpses with wind magic.
“These Killer Bees are really persistent.”
“Yeah. Who knew they’d bring whole swarms like this.”
Bees kept coming from all directions, and I started feeling kinda bad for them.
“But if they keep at it without giving up, it’s a breeze for us.”
“Haha, no kidding.”
The next day, a pack of Silver Wolves wandered by, and we learned their stings couldn’t pierce the skin.
Ted practiced water blasts at the Silver Wolves from inside the barrier.
You could really see the results of his control training.
…
The barrier is the strongest.
We collected the Silver Wolves’ pelts and fangs, and dinner that night was meat.
