Chapter 189 – Receiving the Mission
Chapter 189 – Receiving the Mission
The “Nightwalker Alliance,” an organization of the evil faction, was actually extending help to the “Glory Army” of the good faction! This wasn’t just a case of a mouse serving as a bridesmaid for a cat—it was more like the cat becoming the bride for the mouse. Was “Silver Staff,” who issued this mission, so certain that someone would accept the task, fully aware that their actions would benefit the opposing faction?
But upon closer thought, it didn’t seem all that strange. After all, most members of the “Nightwalker Alliance” were opportunists. As long as they could gain sufficient benefits, who would care about something as trivial as factional opposition?
Moreover, Punk suspected that Princess Trelinka probably never imagined she would receive help from the opposing evil faction at a time when her forces were suffering repeated defeats. And as a follower of Tyr, the God of Justice, she would absolutely refuse such “assistance.” Therefore, Punk could almost conclude that this operation was entirely organized by the “Nightwalker Alliance” on its own initiative. As for their motives, although he couldn’t fully grasp them yet, it was definitely not because of “Silver Staff’s” so-called “patriotic sentiments”!
In fact, Punk strongly suspected that the “Nightwalker Alliance’s” goal was to prolong this poorly prepared, doomed-to-fail civil strife, perhaps even escalating it into a force powerful enough to thoroughly suppress the “Church Faction.”
But these matters had little to do with Punk. He neither cared about the future direction of the Dillon Kingdom nor whether the ever-expanding Church of Dawn would gain another religious vassal state. The only thing he cared about was profit.
To be precise, what concerned him most at the moment was that batch of “High-Concentration Holy Water” and the assets of a Formal-Level cleric.
Setting aside whether killing a cleric would yield useful equipment, just those five bottles of “High-Concentration Holy Water” were incredibly valuable treasures.
The power they contained could be used to remove curses, which was almost equivalent to a “Master-Level Conjuration Spell—Curse Removal” magic scroll that could be cast instantly.
Moreover, as a strategic resource that could be diluted and distributed to thousands of soldiers, “High-Concentration Holy Water” was undoubtedly more valuable than the handful of Gold Coins Punk had hastily dug out from the ruins of Doleiz. Not to mention, this highly purified potion was particularly effective at countering dark-aligned creatures.
Punk was certain that splashing a bottle of “High-Concentration Holy Water” on a dark-aligned creature, such as an undead, would inflict damage no less than that of a Master-Level spell!
In fact, the fact that these twenty-five bottles of “High-Concentration Holy Water” were distributed among five churches to mitigate risks, each guarded by a Formal-Level cleric, was proof enough of their preciousness.
After learning this news, Punk had already made up his mind—if there were no traps, he would definitely claim a share of the spoils from this church assault. His second target was the church at “307 Old Lantern District, Mimig City.”
Punk had carefully weighed the risks and benefits—this was a joint operation, meaning he wouldn’t be the only one attacking the churches. Although his “companions” in the assault weren’t trustworthy, the likelihood of infighting was relatively low, given “Silver Staff’s” explicit prohibition against killing each other. Moreover, all the churches storing the “High-Concentration Holy Water” destined for the front lines were located in the northern part of the Dillon Kingdom, and the “No. 307 Old Lantern District, Mimig City” that Punk planned to attack was the most remote city of them all.
This meant that Archbishop “Kasparqi” of the “Dillon Kingdom Diocese”—rumored to have one foot already in the Master-Level—would be completely unable to intervene in time.
Additionally, the priest transporting the holy water in the “Old Lantern District” was only Level 10, and most of his intelligence had already been gathered by the “Nightwalker Alliance.” If Punk didn’t dare strike such an ideal target, he might as well forget about pursuing the path of power and hide away in some deep mountain forest instead!
“Since the decision is made, let me review the intel on this target.”
Punk murmured softly to himself, then channeled a strand of mana carrying information into the Black Card.
Upon receiving the mana, the Black Card vibrated faintly, and the tiny silver-embossed text on it quickly shifted. It now read:
We warmly welcome Mr. “Black Robe” to accept this mission. During the mission, you may withdraw at any time, but you must not attack your teammates before the task is completed—otherwise, Silver Staff himself will eliminate the traitor!
Mission Target: Church at No. 307, Old Lantern District, Mimig City.
Current Participants: Black Robe (Punk’s codename), Bloodclaw.
Mission Intel: Erok, a Level 10 Formal-Level Priest, is leading ten Apprentice-Level Priests and ten Apprentice-Level Holy Warriors, preparing to transport five vials of “High-Concentration Holy Water” to the battlefield for immediate deployment.
Erok is a devout follower of the Lord of the Dawn and the current head of the Moss family. He advanced to Formal-Level Priest seventy-nine years ago and sustained a jaw injury forty-six years ago, which is why he always wears an iron mask. The bright white priest’s staff he carries is suspected to be Formal-Level equipment!
According to investigations, Erok excels in summoning divine spells, with a particular preference for “Formal-Level Summoning Spell—Summon Lesser Celestial” and “Formal-Level Evocation Spell—Blade of Holy Judgment.” Additionally, Erok possesses at least six levels in the Holy Warrior class.
Note: Erok’s alignment is suspected to be Chaotic Good, and he shows little regard for the lives of low-level clergy.
It had to be said, the thoroughness of this intel surprised Punk. He had initially assumed the “Nightwalker Alliance” would only gather basic information like the target’s level and background, but he never expected their intelligence to be so exhaustive—even detailing the enemy’s preferred combat techniques.
Puck tucked the Black Card back into his ring, his expression darkening.
This mission was practically a sure success. A prepared mage could unleash combat power beyond imagination, especially with a capable sorcerer as his partner.
What truly gave Punk pause was the “Nightwalker Alliance”—or rather, the mastermind behind it in the Dillon Kingdom, Silver Staff. Punk had originally thought the “Nightwalker Alliance” was just a hastily formed underground organization, but now it seemed… their infiltration of the Dillon Kingdom had reached a terrifying extent.
After pondering for a moment, however, Punk could only shake his head and let out a cold, silent laugh inwardly. He did not cancel his decision to accept the mission to attack the Church. In fact, it was precisely because of the Nightwalker Alliance’s various bizarre behaviors that Punk grew even more curious about this strange alliance.
Most importantly, the Haitzita Magic Box gave Punk ample confidence. He decided to first activate the Magic Box’s shielding ability to conduct a reconnaissance. Even if Silver Staff had set up some scheme or trap, or even personally pursued him, Punk was confident he could evade it all with the power of the Haitzita Magic Box.
To put it bluntly, even if Punk simply dug a hole to hide in temporarily, and Silver Staff and Archmage Sangus walked right past the entrance, they would have no hope of detecting Punk’s presence. Using divination spells to plot against him was utterly absurd—this was the source of Punk’s confidence!
The only thing that frustrated Punk now was one question—why did his partner have to be the chatterbox Bloodclaw!
