Chapter 23 – Return
Chapter 23 – Return
Freshly promoted to Apprentice-Level (Level 5), Punk began voraciously studying apprentice-level spells on his way back to Konola City. However, he quickly realized that although apprentice-level spells were theoretically just upgraded versions of novice spells—and should share the same fundamental structure—they were actually at least twice as complex due to the need to channel more mana and unleash greater power. Even with the System’s assistance, learning these spells proved far more challenging than mastering novice spells!
To make matters worse, Punk noticed that the number of apprentice-level spells in his inherited knowledge was significantly limited. Recalling the exorbitant prices on the Mage Guild’s spell exchange list for apprentice-level spells, he felt grateful for the wealth of knowledge left by his parents. At the Guild’s steep rates, most itinerant mages (wild mages) would need to invest immense time and effort to acquire spells, which explained why many only mastered a handful of common, less valuable spells.
In contrast, mages with proper lineages had it different. (Studying under a mentor only made one a candidate for inheritance; true inheritors still had to purchase cultivation resources.) These “academic” mages could learn a vast array of spells, allowing them to combine effects for significantly enhanced results. For instance, pairing Grease with Fireball could mimic the power of Blaze, yet consume only a third of the mana. Moreover, academic mages had free access to rare and potent spells, even exclusive Secret Techniques, making their methods unpredictable and formidable. Meanwhile, itinerant mages typically relied on a few ordinary spells, lacking versatility and power. Despite their combat experience, they often found themselves at a disadvantage against equally skilled academic mages—especially with the latter’s strong backing (mentors)!
Punk surmised that his parents might have been fortunate itinerant mages. Their inherited memories contained progressively scarcer knowledge at higher levels; apprentice-level was barely sufficient, but Formal-Level would be stretched thin. With such limited knowledge, aspiring to become Legendary? That seemed implausible.
Punk knew he needed to plan for the future. Though Formal-Level was still a long way off, waiting until promotion to act would be too late. Thus, he decided to inquire about Formal-Level mages seeking disciples upon returning to Konola City, aiming to get a head start.
“But all that can wait until I’m settled.”
Puck sighed softly. His immediate priority in Konola City was to exchange for that Alchemical Potions recipe and get his alchemy workshop running. While high-tier professionals might disregard mere currency, and true Secret Techniques weren’t for sale, at the Apprentice-Level, money still held considerable sway.
————————Break————————For Punk, time always flew by when he was learning and practicing knowledge. In his perception, he had barely taken a few steps before he could already see the distant silhouette of Konola City. Yet the System reminded him that he had been walking through the wasteland for three full days!
During these three days, Punk encountered no disturbances while studying new spells. The wandering beasts, sensing the intimidating aura emanating from his Apprentice-Level soul, fled far away rather than daring to approach and cause trouble. Thus, Punk made his way back to Konola City with ease!
This time, when Punk entered through the side gate, the old man was so stunned he forgot to ask for registration. The memory of professionals is remarkably powerful—even those at Apprentice Rank are no exception, and Formal-Level experts can effortlessly achieve “photographic memory.” The old man clearly remembered that this young mage in a hooded Mage Robe had been merely Apprentice Rank during his last entry into the city. Now, after just one week (a week in Fearun lasts nine days) away, he had returned as an Apprentice-Level expert. Since when had leveling up become so easy?
Punk paid no attention to the old warrior standing rigidly to the side, whose entire worldview and philosophy seemed shattered. What puzzled him more was how, in just a week, Konola City had adopted an entirely new style—and what was with this overwhelming natural theme?
Every house along the streets and alleys facing the sunrise had been painted with a pattern using cheap green dye by the residents. Though the impoverished artists’ skills were clearly subpar, resulting in rather abstract depictions, one could still make out the image of a crop seedling. Despite some embellishments and exaggerations in the design, Punk recognized it as the sprout of Ququ Wheat—a staple crop commonly cultivated in the Faerûn Plane, named for its twisted stalks. Additionally, Punk noticed people wearing wreaths woven from leaves and broad-leafed grass on their heads, with fashion-conscious girls adorning them with small flowers. Many had switched to green outerwear and trousers, and conversations were filled with more laughter and cheer. The various green seedling-shaped paintings and decorations imbued the entire city with a vibrant, lively atmosphere, transforming its very ambiance.
Punk didn’t dwell on it. He planned to find a shop for a hearty meal and inquire with the owner after completing his task. He avoided asking passersby—his mage attire caused people to steer clear from a distance. Grabbing someone randomly for questions might scare them off or even incite chaos. Currently seeking a mentor from the good-aligned factions, Punk needed to maintain a “friendly and approachable” reputation.
However, as Punk passed by a particular shop, he paused. It was the barbecue joint where he had previously purchased roasted meat. Their grilled dishes were exceptionally delicious—even with his Ancient Elves lineage dampening his enthusiasm for meat, he still fondly recalled the juicy, tender cuts and the perfectly seasoned, aromatic sauce.Punk entered the shop and spotted the enthusiastic uncle. The uncle was about to greet the new customer when he recognized the young mage who had previously bought barbecue from him. After all, as an ordinary barbecue shop owner, he had served very few professionals. Though the mage always wore a hood, revealing only a smooth, pale chin, BBQ Uncle had remembered Punk!
“Haha, young mage, thank you for patronizing my humble shop again,” BBQ Uncle said with familiar ease.
Punk didn’t respond to his greeting, simply ordering a portion of barbecue in a flat tone before falling silent. This left the uncle awkwardly scratching the back of his head and forcing a stiff chuckle.
Only when the barbecue was served did Punk finally speak in a low voice, asking BBQ Uncle about the city’s changes.
The uncle initially showed a surprised expression, then suddenly adopted an exaggerated look of realization. “Young man, you must be from out of town! It’s currently mid-Sprouting Season, and the Kamos Kingdom area is celebrating the ‘Verdant Festival’!”
