Chapter 1 – Prologue

‘When did it all go wrong?’

I thought as I looked out at the writhing black horizon.

‘Was it when I gave up on my ability and started learning Swordplay?’

Perhaps that was it.

But who could blame me?

Given that the first thing I summoned with a trait of such an ambiguous name as [Sole Successor of the Magitech Civilization] was a tiny metal insect barely 20cm long.

Anyone would have been disappointed. However, those insects had now become the backbone that maintained my Magitech Legion.

My Magitech Legion, which was currently surrounded by Monsters.

Kwakwaaaaang-!

My Magitech Artillery Units, which looked like giant octopuses with three legs, were emitting light without a moment’s rest, but the number of Monsters covering the horizon showed no sign of decreasing.

The same went for my regrets.

‘Or… was it when I trusted those sons of bitches?’

Humanity had been repeatedly and severely beaten by the Villains who had collectively betrayed humanity and sided with the Monsters. By the time the severity of the Villains’ threat was realized, the tide of war had already turned.

‘Maybe it was when we lost the Last City.’

The Last City was the place where humanity had survived and fought back until the very end. But they couldn’t overturn a war that had already been lost.

Soon after, the city was abandoned, and the surviving humans scattered. That was the reason why, in the end, I became the sole survivor left alone in the world.

‘If only I had realized the true value of my ability a little sooner…’

Would something have been different then?

As my giant Magitech Colossi swept the ground with their hands, the Monsters flew away like insects. However, even those behemoths maintaining the front line could not hold out against the endless onslaught of sheer numbers.

‘Just once… if only I had one more chance!’

It was just as I was thinking that.

Paaaat-

Suddenly, a brilliant light began to emanate from within my clothes.

“Th-this is?”

[Seed of Regression].

It was an Artifact I had carried until now, not knowing how to use it.

“Could it… be?”

It happened the moment I gripped that seed in my hand.

Suddenly, a streak of bright light enveloped me.

And I lost consciousness.
