Chapter 40 – The Safe Successfully Obtained

Chapter 40 – The Safe Successfully Obtained

Enge Laboratory is located in the eastern part of Xilong City, about four to five kilometers from the station.

After leaving the station, Xiao Wuwang casually dispatched a few nearby zombies before retrieving his mountain bike.

“Boom~~”

Xiao Wuwang swung his leg over the bike, twisted the throttle, and headed straight for Enge Laboratory.

The sudden noise instantly shattered the tranquility of the surroundings.

Several zombies that had been wandering nearby were drawn by the loud roar. Dragging their broken bodies, they stumbled out from various corners, emitting low, terrifying hisses. Their hollow eyes gleamed with a hunger for living flesh as they rushed toward Xiao Wuwang’s direction.

Xiao Wuwang paid no attention to the zombies, continuing on his motorcycle toward his destination.

As he neared Enge Laboratory, he deliberately took a detour to lure the zombies behind him into a nearby office building. Only then did he stow his motorcycle, shake off the zombies, and proceed toward Enge Laboratory.

The main gate of Enge Laboratory was tightly shut. On the ground lay numerous skeletons and rotting, dismembered corpses, filling the air with a nauseating stench of decay.

Clearly, significant chaos had erupted here when the crisis first broke out.

After observing the area, Xiao Wuwang noticed a gap in the low wall not far away. Preferring not to alert anything by using the main gate, he cautiously entered the laboratory through the opening.

Once inside, he carefully bypassed the outer office buildings and headed straight for the experimental building at the rear.

According to Silva, the target individual, Marcus, and others were on the underground third floor of the experimental building.

As he approached the experimental building, Xiao Wuwang drew his Type 92 Rapid Pistol (Modified Type II). Staying alert, he cautiously moved closer.

The door to the experimental building was slightly ajar, and the light inside was dim.

Xiao Wuwang quietly observed the interior, still able to make out the environment.

Inside was a scene of disarray, with many mangled corpses lying on the ground. To his slight relief, he saw no signs of active zombies.

It seemed the zombies here had likely been drawn away by some commotion.

With this assumption, Xiao Wuwang stepped directly inside.

He made his way to the entrance of the underground levels.

It was unclear what power system the experimental building used, but even after so long into the apocalypse, the electricity was still functioning.

After a moment’s thought, Xiao Wuwang decided to take the elevator down.

Although this would likely attract the attention of zombies below, it was the most straightforward method.

His stay at this station site was limited to six hours. Besides the mission, he also needed to retrieve the Supply Crate.

Indeed, when his train pulled into the station, he had used his radar to roughly locate the Supply Crate’s position.

His radar’s maximum detection range was 10 kilometers, with a precise detection range of 1 kilometer.

The Supply Crate was located about 6 kilometers north of the station, beyond the precise detection range. He only knew its approximate location.

According to Silva, that area was the central district of Xilong City.

The city center meant it was a gathering place for zombies. Retrieving the Supply Crate from amidst a horde of zombies would be incredibly difficult and dangerous.

Thus, from the very beginning, Xiao Wuwang had no intention of completing Silva’s mission through gentle means.

Xiao Wuwang approached the elevator door, swiped Silva’s card, and immediately gained elevator privileges.

Stepping into the elevator, he pressed the button for floor -5, and the elevator began its slow descent.

Xiao Wuwang watched the floor numbers displayed on the screen.

With a soft ding, the elevator doors slowly opened.

Even before the doors had fully parted, a pungent stench of decay assaulted his senses.

Xiao Wuwang aimed his rifle with both hands at the elevator entrance, ready to fire at any moment.

The doors had only opened halfway before they jammed.

“Ugh… aah…”

Zombies outside pressed against each other, not only jamming the doors but also preventing themselves from entering. They could only emit chilling, guttural hisses as their grayish-blue arms frantically reached through the gap, clawing inward in an attempt to grab Xiao Wuwang.

His eyes cold and focused, Xiao Wuwang swiftly pulled the trigger. Bang, bang, bang—each bullet found its mark, piercing the skulls of the zombies. Several fell immediately, but more continued to surge forward from behind.

Bang, bang, bang…

After gunning down over a dozen zombies, the onslaught finally subsided.

Xiao Wuwang stepped out of the elevator and scanned his surroundings. No new zombies appeared nearby, so he dragged the bodies away from the elevator entrance to ensure they wouldn’t obstruct his return later.

With the path cleared, he began to carefully survey the environment of the underground fifth floor.

After orienting himself, he cautiously made his way toward Room D-205, following the Map provided by Silva.

Along the way, Xiao Wuwang encountered several scattered groups of zombies. Thanks to his agility and precise marksmanship, he dispatched them all with ease.

Now that both his basic attributes had improved significantly, he no longer felt as much fear when facing Level 2 zombies.

The most dangerous encounter was when two Crawlers attacked simultaneously. These Crawlers were agile, their limbs as powerful as springs, allowing them to move effortlessly across walls and ceilings with astonishing speed.

However, Xiao Wuwang reacted just as quickly. He immediately switched to his QBU-191 Armor-Piercing Precision Rifle (Modified Type II) and held down the trigger, unleashing a full magazine of 60 rounds in a dense barrage of fire. Despite their speed, the two Crawlers were riddled with bullets before they could reach him, losing their mobility entirely.

After reloading, Xiao Wuwang put a final bullet into each of their heads, ending their wretched existence once and for all.

Finally, Xiao Wuwang arrived at the door of Room D-205.

As Silva had instructed, he took out an electronic keycard and swiped it against the digital lock by the door. With a beep, the lock lit up green, and the door slowly swung open.

He cautiously aimed his rifle into the room, relieved to find no zombies inside. He then approached the storage shelf behind the desk.

He quickly located the ram’s head ornament.

He gripped it and twisted it clockwise.

Sure enough, the entire shelf slid apart to reveal a hidden chamber.

The chamber was small, containing only a safe and a small box.

Xiao Wuwang guessed that the safe likely held the Evolution Potion Silva had mentioned.

Without hesitation, he stored it directly into his Portable Space.

As for the other box, since it was placed alongside the safe, it probably wasn’t something Common either.

He opened the box to find a card similar to the electronic keycard Silva had given him.

He wasn’t sure what the card was for, but he didn’t discard it. Instead, he stored it in his Portable Space as well.

After securing the most important treasure, he did not leave immediately.

This was one of the most critical laboratories of the Engel Group, and the various machines and equipment here still held significant value for reclamation.

Without bothering to assess the exact worth of these devices, he tossed them all into his Portable Space, where they were Broken Down into Mechanical Parts and Electronic Components.

After nearly clearing out the entire floor of the laboratory, he arrived before a room with a sign reading “Core Data Room.”

Beneath the sign hung a conspicuous warning plaque—”No Unauthorized Entry.”

Since he was already here, he naturally had to take a look inside!

Xiao Wuwang took out Silva’s electronic card and swiped it across the access control sensor.

“Beep—”

A long tone sounded, but instead of opening, the door lit up with a glaring red light, accompanied by blaring alarms.

“Damn, this door seems to have higher Privileges. Silva’s electronic card isn’t working!”

At that moment, mechanical whirring echoed from the ceiling and surrounding walls. Immediately after, several openings appeared without warning, and dark gun barrels slowly extended from them.
