Chapter 6 – The Beginning of Training
Chapter 6 – The Beginning of Training
On top of the jostling wagon as we traveled, my intensive magic training kicked off today.
Sid’s the one who’s going to teach me magic.
“Focus.”
“Yes!”
“Gather a small ball of mana in your palm. Imagine water.”
…
Like this? No clue if I’m doing it right.
I don’t feel anything forming at all.
Maybe it’s impossible since I have no aptitude for water.
“Come on, focus.”
“Yes!”
But Master doesn’t seem to think so.
Heh. I kinda forced my way into being his disciple.
Ei, how about this?
…
It’s chilly today… no, cut it out.
Other thoughts keep popping into my head right away.
Close my eyes. Empty my mind. Empty mind.
…
I can’t sense the flow of mana at all.
Some chuunibyou kid would probably feel it way more than me.
…
Chuunibyou, huh.
“O sealed left hand of mine, unleash thy power!”
I thrust my hand toward the sky.
Master shot me a fierce glare.
Eek.
Focus, focus.
Small water orb. Small water orb. Small water orb.
Time for the mantra strategy.
After half a day of grunting and groaning, it hit me out of nowhere!
Splash!
So this is what it feels like when mana moves!
“M-Master! A ton of water came out!”
Whack.
“Not ‘came out’—control it.” Master bonked me on the head with a crumpled paper ball.
Boo.
I finally got water to appear for the first time, and Master’s being way too Spartan about it.
“Marie, you’ve got intensive reading and writing practice later, so conserve your stamina.”
Heart, grinning in a kinda scary way, used wind magic to instantly evaporate the water soaking me.
What is this? Magic is incredible.
I was blown away by the first spell I’d ever experienced firsthand.
Turns out magic has uses like this too…
“Sid. How’s Marie doing?”
“She’s struggling with magic from blessings she has no aptitude for, but she got water to come out, so it’s workable. I’ll get her proficient enough.”
Sid was unusually motivated.
He’d never taken a single disciple no matter how much they begged.
Fernet’s eyes went wide in surprise.
The kid had a talent for intel work, so Sid had focused on honing that.
Fufu.
Or maybe even the demon Sid goes soft for girls?
“Heart. How about you?”
“She’s got good fundamentals, but… sword alone? She’d top out at C-rank no matter how hard she trains.”
“I see.”
C-rank’s plenty to defend herself.
“What about the bow?”
“If she builds up her core strength, she could manage decently… but her attention span’s too short. Might not suit her.”
Her attention span really is next to nothing.
“Got it. We’ll focus on ukemi and self-defense techniques. Train her to read presences too.”
“And Fernet?”
“Barrier magic should be a breeze once she learns it. With that mana pool, not even a dragon could break through. Main hurdles are deployment speed and multi-layer experiments.”
“Understood. I’ll leave it to you. Oh, and manners lessons too.”
As I mentally simulated Marie’s upcoming training regimen, everyone was staring at me with warm, smirking eyes.
“W-What?”
“Gain’s the most into it.”
“Can’t get enough of how cute Marie is, huh?”
“Daddies always go soft for their girls.”
They teased me mercilessly, but you guys are no different.
I’m just worried about Marie, that’s all.
Kids catch fevers easy, and they crash hard if they push too much.
Sheesh.
I’m good playing the villain role.
