Chapter 5 – Resolve to Raise Her

Chapter 5 – Resolve to Raise Her

One month had passed since the night of our first day on the journey, when we all decided to take on Marie’s education.

Who would’ve thought Marie was carrying a bomb like this.

So that’s what the nagging sense of discomfort I’d been feeling was all about.

“Hey, is she asleep?”

“Yeah, out like a light.”

“We drilled her good during the day.”

Sid grinned with that wicked look of his.

“Who’d have guessed the little sister swiped the young lady’s blessing…”

“So Marie was the one with the Light Aptitude…”

In a perfect world, she’d study under her parents, enroll in school, have fun with friends, and grow up to become a Saintess serving the church.

She must’ve thought her sister stole that shining future from her—that’s why she steeled herself and left home.

I knew something was off.

Even at just five years old, she never once missed her parents. No doubt because there was no going back.

Thinking she had no blessing at all, she had no choice but to bury her feelings and force herself to grow up.

Marie had given a bitter smile as she said, “All I could see was a future filled with hatred for my sister, so for my own sake, I had to cut ties with my family.” That was probably her honest truth.

It was straight out of one of those fairy tales about the devil’s child who goes around stealing blessings.

Just imagining myself in her shoes—being the one robbed—made my chest tighten with rage.

“Looks like aptitude really is everything. She said the Green Spirit told her the same thing.”

“Yeah. Spirit blessings might not cut it, but maybe the goddesses’ blessings will work.”

“I’m curious if she can actually use attributes she has no aptitude for.”

Everyone chimed in with their own thoughts.

“Well, silver lining in the misfortune—she should be able to use Light magic with her aptitude. At worst, she might even handle all attributes. Her MP pool is on another level too, so we all gotta raise Marie right. Haha. If we screw up and she turns into a devil or something, that’s on us big time.”

He ended half-joking with a laugh, but everyone’s faces turned dead serious as they started muttering to themselves.

Huh? No matter how you slice it, that sweet, airheaded girl turning into a devil? Unthinkable.

Haha. Bunch of worrywarts.

But having the Light blessing means the path to Church School and becoming a Saintess is open to her now.

If the church treats her fairly, anyway…

She’d laughed about how she’d decided not to use magic and just grow herbs instead, but we have to set her up for success either way.

That night’s discussion sealed it—we resolved to take full responsibility for raising Marie.
