Chapter 43 – The Day Lily Learned the Truth

Chapter 43 – The Day Lily Learned the Truth

“Dad, I want to be able to use magic like everyone else!”

The father sitting across the table from her hardened his expression and said, “Impossible.”

“Come on, why? Why not?”

“Lily…”

“Mom, stay out of it! Dad! Explain it properly!”

Her father and mother exchanged glances and nodded.

No way, what? That’s scary.

“It’s about time we told you. By the way, have you ever checked your status before?”

“Yeah.”

“I taught you how back then… No, I must have forbidden it.”

With a sigh, her father said, “Chant ‘Status Full Open’.”

“Status Full Open?”

⚔ STATUS ⚔
Lily ♀ 10yo
🍀 Green Aptitude
⚡ Lv. 1
❤️ HP: 10/10
✨ MP: 5/5
💨 Light Attribute Lv. 1
祝福 Blessing:
💫 Light Spirit

No way, it says “Light Spirit” right there?

“Kyaa!! I have the Light Spirit’s blessing! I’m a saintess!!”

I was so thrilled I let out a scream.

I thought I saw that white light back then, but Dad said it wasn’t real!

So it really wasn’t a dream after all…

But both Dad and Mom are looking at me with sad faces.

Huh? Is the text wrong or something?

A little uneasy now.

“What? It’s not?”

“Look closely. Your aptitude is green.”

“But the blessing is light, right?”

“Yeah.”

Dad let out a deep sigh and straightened his posture.

Why had they hidden from me all this time that I was a saintess?

Tension built from Dad’s unusually grave atmosphere.

“You know that blessings without aptitude can’t be used, right?”

“I’ve heard that, but…”

Dad continued slowly, in a clear tone.

“You have no light aptitude, so even with the light blessing, you can’t use it. It’s the same as having no blessing.”

So it really is a light blessing. Don’t scare me like that.

“That doesn’t make sense. But it’s a light blessing, right?”

I’ll go brag about my light blessing to everyone.

I can’t wait to see their shocked faces.

Hehehe. Mina’s gonna be so jealous if I rub it in.

“Lily. Calm down and listen carefully. You remember you have a twin sister, right?”

“Yeah, kinda. Is she alive? Everyone avoids the topic, so I thought she died.”

“Yeah, she’s not living here. Your sister had light aptitude, and you stole her blessing. What you have there is your sister’s blessing.”

Hmm. So she really did die, huh.

“So? I wanna go brag already.”

“Sit down! You remember getting the blessing, right?”

I was fidgeting and stood up halfway when he yelled.

Man, this is such a hassle.

Hurry up already.

“Hmm, sorta. I saw a pretty light and jumped at it… So that really was the light blessing. Awesome. That good?”

“What have you done…”

Mom covered her face with both hands and burst into tears.

Huh? Why’s she crying?

Isn’t she happy?

I was the only one excited, confused by my parents’ heavy mood.

“What do you mean?”

“What do you think happens to the sister who got robbed?”

Huh?

“That has nothing to do with me, though.”

“She became the same as you—no blessing.”

Dad was starting to get irritated, and it was kinda scary.

Plus, it’s not the same at all.

“I have a light blessing, don’t I?”

“I told you, no light aptitude means you can’t use it.”

“Even with the light blessing?”

“That’s right… Sigh. It’s still too hard for you to understand… She figured it all out faster than me, even at that age…”

Dad sighed and asked, “So? Can you write letters yet?”

He knows I can’t…

“…Not yet.”

“Why not yet? How long are you gonna keep running from ugly truths?”

“I’m not running! I said I’d do it if you taught me magic! Besides, I’m a saintess, so don’t order me around!”

BAM!!

Dad suddenly slammed the table, startling me.

“Never call yourself a saintess again! If you do, I’ll send you to the church—be prepared for that!”

What the heck, all of a sudden. Threatening to abandon me like an orphan? Unbelievable.

So what about teaching me magic?

Not the vibe anymore.

Dad muttered bitterly, “Damn it! If only she were here, this wouldn’t have…” and stormed off to his room in anger.

Mom looked at me with tears welling in her eyes.

“Lily. Stealing a light blessing is a capital crime.”

Huh?

So my sister stole my light?

“What? That’s unforgivable. Did my twin sister get the death penalty for that?”

“No. You stole it, Lily. You. You’re the one who’s entirely at fault. You’re only ten, so it might be hard to understand.”

“Why me? I haven’t been sentenced to death.”

She just said death penalty.

The one who died was my sister.

“You were just a tiny child, so you were forgiven. But they said, ‘If word gets out that Lily has the “light blessing,” she’ll be imprisoned.’ So listen well. This must stay absolutely secret.”

“Just for jumping at the white light? Just for having it?”

“That’s proof you stole it.”

What the heck. Why am I suddenly the bad guy?

“So I can’t brag about the light blessing to anyone?”

“That’s right.”

“Is that why I can’t use magic?”

“Yes.”

“Did my dead sister steal my blessing?”

“No. When you stole your sister’s blessing, you discarded your own blessing too. Along with your sister, who had been teaching you all sorts of things.”

I didn’t discard it.

I just jumped at the one I wanted.

“No way…”

Then I didn’t need it.

Why didn’t you stop me?

It’s all, all her fault.
