Chapter 32 – Marie's Day Off
Today’s a day off, so I’m tagging along to watch Heart hunt magical beasts.
Well, Gain basically kicked us out of the house, telling us to go play like parent and child.
So we came to the Adventurer Guild to look for an easy request.
“Yo.”
A burly adventurer sticks his foot out in front of Heart.
As usual, Heart kicks that foot skyward.
“Ow!”
“Hmph. Marie, wait here with Gobas for a bit.”
“Okaay~.”
I get scooped up by Gobas-san—who’s got a huge build and a kinda scary face—and turn into a toy for all the burly adventurers.
“Marie. Want anything?”
“Guys with scary faces like this must suck, huh? C’mere~.”
They all have scary faces, so what am I supposed to say?
These guys talk to me in sweet, coaxing voices while poking and squishing my cheeks, so all I can do is laugh.
“Hehe. I’d be happy if everyone comes back without getting hurt.”
To shut them up quick, I flash a big smile—my killer move.
“Uu… Marie really is such a good girl.”
“How’d a cold guy like Heart end up with such a sweet kid… uu.”
“Uncle’ll do anything for Marie, y’know.”
The uncles start blubbering and fussing.
Oh crap. Went too far.
I look to Heart for help, but he’s over by the request board, flirting it up with some glamorous big sis.
He’s always like this.
“Alright, Marie. Time to head out~.”
“Okaay~. Byeee~.”
I wave to the burly uncles, hop into Heart’s arms, and we leave the Adventurer Guild.
“Hehe. Mr. Popular, huh?”
“You too.”
No, that’s totally different.
That big sis from earlier gave him a bento, so we’re saving it for later.
“Am I getting a mom?”
*Whack!*
He chops me on the head.
“Ow!”
“No way.”
“But~.”
“Don’t worry about it. It’s not like that.”
I wouldn’t mind getting a mom, though.
Out in the nearby forest, I watch Heart hunt rabbits with his bow while he basks in the sun.
Sigh, that sunlight filtering through the leaves is so bright.
“You’ve got a barrier up, so I could sit farther away, y’know.”
“Fernet couldn’t make it today, so it’s just me. And the request is for Horned Rabbit meat anyway.”
Gotcha. My safety comes before his leveling up.
Well, these rabbits are delicious.
I’ve got permission to stay out overnight too, so rabbit for dinner tonight, I bet.
“By the way, what’s up with Fernet-san today?”
“Hm. Probably getting a lecture or some training from Gain.”
Pfft. He screwed up again.
“You two really are like parent and child.”
“Heh. Yeah.”
They’re both such brats.
Hehe. Fernet-san’s family story from the other day cracked me up.
“Um, can I ask about your family?”
“Yeah. They’re dead. Killed by adventurers.”
