Chapter 31 – Note’s Report

Chapter 31 – Note's Report

“Everyone except Note and Bishop Moras, withdraw.”

When I said that, the priests quietly left the room.

I couldn’t stop worrying about that unfortunate child who had her blessing unilaterally stripped away.

Never before had the moment the door closed felt so agonizingly slow.

“S-So, Note. How is Marie doing?”

Having just returned from my business trip, I leaned forward eagerly with my question. Note looked a little surprised and handed the report to Bishop Moras.

“The details are all in there. My overall impression is that she has exceptionally high learning ability.”

“What do you mean by that?”

“When I knocked on the door, she opened it herself properly.”

“Hm?”

Such an obvious thing?

“…For someone without that habit, it’s quite difficult. But Marie put it into practice right away after seeing it just once.”

“I-I see!”

Hm. I don’t really get it.

“And the biggest surprise was during meals.”

“Oh?”

That remote border village apparently eats with sticks or by hand.

If we train her starting now, she should catch up just fine.

“She was completely accustomed to it.”

Hm?

“Not that she was incredibly refined or crude?”

“Exactly. She blended in perfectly with the white priests around her—no awkwardness at all.”

Hm?

“What’s so surprising about that?”

“When I asked her about it, she said, ‘Whenever I eat, it’s my habit to match those around me and eat the same way.'”

“Oh.”

I’d never even considered that.

I’d always thought the more refined, the better—but it’s like that, huh.

“She says some places eat with their hands, and she’s even learned upper noble etiquette.”

That child certainly carried herself with elegance, but upper noble manners too…?

“And she goes to bed at night and wakes up on time. She follows the schedule she made herself, acting precisely when she’s supposed to.”

“Is that rare for a six-year-old too?”

“Yes. Tutors usually start with teaching discipline like that, but she didn’t need it. I never expected her to make a schedule like that herself, though.”

Well, she traveled with adventurers, so that’s to be expected.

“What are you teaching her now?”

“Nothing.”

“Huh?”

“Normally, with six-year-olds, the focus is on teaching discipline. They do simple chores like an hour of garden cleaning a day, and spend the rest of the time learning and playing with the other children. On my own authority, I decided that approach doesn’t suit Marie.”

“So you’re not teaching her anything at all?”

“Marie already knows reading, writing, and arithmetic, of course, along with general knowledge of geography and history. She has the resourcefulness to seek help from others and the wisdom to make reports and ask for advice. I judged she doesn’t need any more education for a six-year-old. She’s a bit lacking in caution, so I’ve asked the gate guards to keep an eye out too.”

Well, now…

“Her mother told me she was very curious and a little strong-willed…”

“Yes. The other day, she wanted some unusual seeds, so I gave her a special card and let her go buy them herself. The report she brought back exceeded all expectations.”

I see.

Maybe it’s best not to meddle carelessly.

“She said she wanted to do research and development, so partly for the safety of those around her—and since gardener Doman can keep watch—I moved her to the detached room in the back garden.”

Research and development…

W-Well, that place has all the facilities she needs.

B-But isn’t she scared being alone in a spot like that?

No, if Note says so, she must be fine.

“And… I’m having her organize the archive room too.”

The archive room—that total dump…?

The one where anyone assigned to it flees after a few days…?

“Why?”

“Smart kids like her get bored without challenging tasks. I waited for her to come ask for help, intending to lend a hand, but that girl took it in a direction way beyond what I imagined… Hehehe.”

Hmmmm.

W-Well, if Note… says so…

“…Don’t push her too hard. Keep up the regular reports from now on.”

“Understood.”

I haven’t explained Marie’s aptitudes or her family situation to Note.

She’s just accommodating my unreasonable request to raise her as a white priest.

This was something I could only ask of her, the tutor with the best reputation.

Bishop Moras is nodding too, so it should be fine.

That said, she was so reluctant to come back as tutor at first, but now she looks like she’s enjoying it—which is a relief.
