Chapter 30 – My First Errand

Chapter 30 – My First Errand

“Um… I heard from the gardener Dorman that you can get expensive seeds around here…”

On a street lined with nothing but high-end shops, a kid like me in cheap clothes sticks out like a sore thumb.

Even the low-level shop clerks are dressed in fancy outfits.

For now, I’ll just ask around at random.

In front of the entrance to a big shop, I steel myself…

“Hey.”

“Yes?”

…only to get grabbed by the collar and blocked from entering.

…Yeah, figures.

As expected.

“I’m from the church, here on an errand.”

“The church?”

“Yes. Looking for plant seeds and alchemy equipment.”

“Hmph. So you’re the one they warned me might come to scout the place?”

Hahaha, he’s mistaking me for a thief.

“No, that’s not it.”

“Just get out.”

Kicked out just like that.

Who knew there’d be trials like this before even shopping.

And this was only the first shop.

Time to try the one next door.

“Come back and I’ll hand you over to the guards!”

Shooed away again with gestures like I’m some stray animal.

This is tough to crack.

My mental fortitude is getting chipped away bit by bit.

If the next one flops, I’ll head back for now.

This shop’s a little smaller than the last, but if I can get the goods…

“Um…”

I peek inside, showing just half my face.

The black-haired guy at the entrance looks me up and down.

“We’ve got other customers right now—mind using the back door?”

“Sure. I’m from the church. I know exactly what I want to buy.”

“Gotcha. Follow me then.”

Yeah, makes sense.

No shop wants high-class customers mixing with a commoner in the same space.

I should’ve been more considerate.

We go around to the back, through a small door, and into the employee break room.

So this is how us commoners are supposed to visit on errands…

Heh, yeah, trying the front door would definitely cause a scene.

“Have a seat here. Give me a sec.”

He kindly shows me to a bench and heads into the back.

What a polite guy.

My battered spirits bounce right back.

He returns with a glass of water, kneels down to my eye level, and hands it over.

“So, what brings you here today?”

I smile and hand him the signed requisition. “Plant seeds and a full set of alchemy tools.”

A little nervous.

The clerk glances at the paper and bolts into the back in a panic.

Ahaha. Yeah, the explosion grass is always the tricky part.

While waiting, other clerks praise me—”Impressive errand for such a little one!”—and pat my head—”You’re such a good girl.”

Hehehe. It really feels like my first errand.

It is my first errand.

Just as my water runs out, the clerk comes back with a silver-haired middle-aged man in fancy clothes.

“Who sent you on this errand?”

“I put in the request myself. They told me to buy it personally. I’ve got the church’s purchase card too.”

I see.

Probably because Note figured if someone else ran the errand for me, they’d suspect a terrorist.

“Some items aren’t in stock right now, so we’ll deliver everything to the church once it’s ready. That work for you?”

“No problem. Payment’s with this card.”

I hand over the card, and he takes it carefully before heading to the back.

“Name’s Bordo. And you, miss?”

“Marie.”

“Could you be the kid from the S-rank adventurer Black Dragon party’s place?”

“Yes.”

Bordo knows Heart.

Now that my identity’s vouched for, maybe he’ll sell me dangerous seeds in the future too.

“I see. If you need anything else down the line, feel free to come through the back anytime.”

“Yes, I’d appreciate that.”

The shops that booted me out would be awkward even via the back door, but having a familiar face will make things easier from now on.

Honestly, I’m grateful.

I get my card and the goods voucher back and am about to head to the church when Bordo offers to walk me there.

As we’re strolling down the main avenue, the First Holy Knights come riding toward us.

“It’s Marie after all. What are you doing out here?”

“Ah, Captain! Errand’s done, so I’m heading back to the church with Bordo.”

“You came all the way here by yourself? Geez, this girl…”

The captain lets out an exasperated sigh, and the vice-captain dismounts with a wry smile, scoops me up, and sets me on the captain’s horse.

“Bordo, I’ll take over from here.”

“Take care, Holy Knights.”

I wave to Bordo, thrilled by the town views from way up high on horseback as we head back to the church.

Of course, Note gave me a thorough scolding afterward—”Always tell the Holy Knights when you’re heading out”—and Gain chewed me out big time once he heard about it.

Lesson learned the hard way. Won’t happen again.

Apparently, a young kid like me wandering around alone gets kidnapped and sold off in no time flat.

What a rough world.
